The National City Christian Church Sanctuary Choir is an integral part of the worship life of the congregation and leads worship, through hymn singing and special gifts of choral and vocal music, throughout the entire year. In addition to singing anthems, hymns and responses, the Sanctuary Choir regularly presents large-scale works with organ and orchestra and participates in community outreach events.
Since the church’s founding in 1930, the choir has sung for presidents and numerous world dignitaries, has collaborated with such musical luminaries as opera greats Leontyne Price and Denyce Graves, and has sung for numerous special events for its national Disciples of Christ membership. The vocal ensemble of 30 singers brings professional section leaders/soloists together with numerous talented volunteer singers of varying skill levels, all of whom share a passion for and dedication to offering to God the finest possible music. The Sanctuary Choir presents repertoire from all major musical periods which honors our church history and traditions and celebrates contemporary sacred music that reflects our congregation’s many nationalities and backgrounds. Our four professional choir section leader/soloists also provide sacred arias, solo songs, and arrangements of African-American spirituals which enrich our worship experience – accompanied by our majestic, 7,100-pipe Möller pipe organ and Steinway grand piano.
The Sanctuary Choir rehearses on Sunday mornings at 9:00 a.m. in the Music Suite, just prior to leading the 11:00 a.m. worship service. Extra rehearsals occur occasionally, most often prior to concerts or special worship services.
There is a place in the National City Christian Church choral program for anyone who wishes to learn the love of singing, to commit to serve those who worship with us, and praise God through sacred song. New singers of all levels of experience and vocal skill are warmly invited to join the choir family.
The National City Christian Church Gospel Choir, under the lively direction of Valeria Foster, began its musical leadership of the 8:30 a.m. worship service in 2002. The choir’s primary purpose is to minister to people through Gospel and African-American spiritual music, accompanied by piano, in a style that is more informal than the 11 a.m. service. Made up of nearly a dozen spirit-filled and spirit-led singers, the Gospel Choir, in addition to its worship leadership, has sung concerts with noted contemporary musician Ken Medema and for Black History Month at the United States Capitol Building and has offered concerts here at National City Christian Church with proceeds going to various charitable organizations in the Washington DC community.
The Gospel Choir is open to singers of all levels of musical experience and background and would welcome you with open arms to their rehearsals on Tuesday evenings at 7:00 p.m.
