As the national church, we are committed to partnering with ministries across the life of the church from congregations, to regions, to general church ministries, and local partners. This Juneteenth, we were pleased to deepen our anti-racist work and celebrate Black life by partnering with the Capital Area Region of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and the African Heritage and Cultural Institute to offer a special Music at Midday concert in honor of the Juneteenth holiday.
On Friday, June 19, Music at Midday welcomed organist and Howard University Professor Mickey Thomas Terry. Mickey Thomas Terry is a critically acclaimed concert organist, scholar, and educator based in Washington, DC. He holds degrees from East Carolina University and a Ph.D. from Georgetown University. A prize-winner in national organ competitions, Dr. Terry has performed throughout the United States and the Caribbean, appeared at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, and been broadcast on American Public Media’s Pipedreams. He is the editor of a celebrated multi-volume African American Organ Music Anthology (MorningStar Music Publishers), now in eleven volumes, and has published widely in leading music journals. Dr. Terry serves as Senior Lecturer in Music at Howard University and is the Organist of Fairfax Presbyterian Church. He is also the 2026–2027 Artist Fellowship recipient from the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities.
Dr. Terry’s concert drew attendees from across the DC metro as well as visitors to the nation’s capital to the concert. His music filled our historic space with a gorgeous curation of pieces leaving attendees with a sense of awe for our historic organ and community. Following the concert, we co-hosted a reception to honor the work of this gathering, welcome Dr. Terry, and most importantly celebrate the liberation of Juneteenth.
