As part of our ongoing Board Member Spotlight series, we are pleased to introduce Alan Williams, whose background in tax law, faithfulness to the life of the congregation and understanding of the wider denominational commitments make his contribution to the Foundation valuable.

Alan has been an attorney in the IRS Office of Chief Counsel since 2008. Since 2014, he has worked in the International division providing support to the IRS regarding the interpretation of tax treaties, the taxation of diplomats and international organizations, information reporting, cross-border information gathering, including U.S. territory taxation. Prior to that, Alan worked in the Income Tax & Accounting division, working on deductions, capitalization, and timing issues.  Alan earned his J.D. at DePaul University and his L.L.M. (Masters of Law) in taxation at Northwestern University.

Alan began attending National City in 2008, joining in 2009, where he got to know his wife, Shana. They married in 2014 and have two children, Jude (13) and Sage (10). Alan first began in leadership as a Deacon in 2010, and since then has also served as an Elder along with various positions on the Congregational Board, including as Moderator from 2019-2022. Alan served on the Foundation Board of Trustees as Moderator from 2019-2022, and currently as Secretary beginning in 2025.

Finally, like Pastor Stephanie, Alan is an enthusiastic supporter of the Arsenal Football Club in London. Come on you Gooners!

What are you reading or listening to right now?

The Mists of Avalon by Marion Zimmer Bradley, a feminist retelling of the Arthurian legends.

What has brought you hope in the last year?

Watching my children grow and develop into fully-realized people has brought me hope in this challenging year.

Why is the work of the Foundation important?

The work of the Foundation is important because it supports the Congregation’s ministries and provides a link to the broader work of the Denomination as a hub for the work of ministry and the fight for justice.
