Please join us today, Friday, March 12, at 12:15 p.m. for the YouTube premiere of this week’s Music at Midday concert by organist Sondra Goldsmith Proctor, Musician-in-Residence for Gunnison Chapel at St. Lawrence University, Canton, New York.

You may view today’s recital by clicking here. If you are not able to tune in for the premiere, you may click on the same link at any time afterwards to view the recording. You may also download or view the printable PDF program by clicking here. The full program includes notes on the music and composers, biographies of today’s artists, and a listing of donors to Music at Midday.

Since we were unable to hold concerts during Black History Month, we are delighted to present this program that celebrates the lives, gifts, and struggles of African Americans through music for organ by Black composers, two of them women. The program was recorded in Gunnison Memorial Chapel at St. Lawrence University, and features narration by Ghanaian student Emmenuella Dwomo Agyei ’21.

This week’s program includes:

  • We Shall Overcome: A Suite Based on the Songs and Struggles of the Civil Rights Movement (I. Rosa: We Shall Overcome; Martin and Ab: Ain’t Gonna Let Nobody Turn Me ‘Round; III. Four Little Girls: Jesus Loves the Little Children; IV. Hope: Black and White Together: There Is a Balm in Gilead) – Sharon J. Willis
  • First Sonata for Organ (Finale: Allegro) – Florence Beatrice Smith Price, ed. Calvert Johnson
  • Lift Every Voice and Sing – J. Rosamond Johnson; arr. Roger Lowe

We are disappointed not to be able to hold Music at Midday concerts in the Sanctuary of National City Christian Church. We are hoping to return to in-person concerts beginning in May, by which time there should be significant progress on the new HVAC system.
